Need We Say More?

Sir Humphrey’s: AP and Reuters photographer Bilal Hussein colludes with insurgents.

The series of photographs remind me of the Internet Documentary Pallywood.  Posed insurgents showing the bravery of defending their homland, the brutality of "The Man", etc, etc.

Always be aware of the context of the reporter when reading "news".  Always be aware of the context of the photographer when looking at "news photos."  Always be aware of the context.

And mine?  Fiscally conservative Democrat that is "pro-victory" in the war on terror.  Just so we are clear on that.

Singing: Once, Twice, Three Times…

Allen October 6th, 2005

While listening to WKY on the way to work this morning, I heard on Mark Shannon’s show that Hinrichs attempted to enter the stadium at least two times and was turned away at the gates.

BTW, NewsOK.com (and therefore Channel 9) are way, way ahead of the other news organizations on this event.  Video e-cast just confirmed what I heard.

Just a note about OU and FBI being tightlipped about the whole proceedings.  When you are hunting turkeys, you sit quietly and call them in.  You don’t scream, "TURKEY!!!!" the first time you see one.

I’m Sooner Born and Sooner Bred…

Allen October 5th, 2005

My wife and I were at the OU vs KSU game when the bomb explosive device went off.  We sit in section 106 and not only heard but felt the explosion.  We called my parents to see if there was any note of the explosion on the TV news and also called my son and daughter to let them know we were OK.

The people next to us called their friend in the police department and told us what had happened.  I remarked to my wife that we were going to take our own sweet time leaving the stadium until the crowds died down.

Several thoughts keep blowing through my mind:

  • Attention President Boren:  We got it.  Really, we do.  We understand that "at no time was anyone in the stadium in any danger."  If you keep being so shrill about it, we might begin to think otherwise.
  • Everyone keeps refering to the "explosive device".  If it isn’t a bomb, but rather an "explosive device", then should we refer to Hinrichs as a "suicide explosive devicer"?
  • If I ever did decide to kill myself, I’m not quite sure I would want to take the time to assemble the components of a bomb explosive device.  Just seems like overkill to me.
  • But if I ever did want to kill myself and others, I would want to take that time.
  • Speaking of which, if his sole intent was only to kill himself, the term "suicide bomber" is an apt term.  What then do we call those who kill themselves with a bomb with the intent of harming others.  I think Michael Yon has an excellent term — mass murderers.
  • Charles at Dustbury has a wicked sense of humor. And led me to the thought that we may have witnessed the world’s first "Sooner Boomer".
  • Sorry about that last one.

Horseshoe Bat Stew

Allen October 3rd, 2005

In what appears to be a growing trend at this weblog, I present the receipe for "Horsehoe Bat Stew":

Ingredients:
  • 4 horseshoe bats.
  • 2 cups diced onions.
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced.
  • 3 Tbsp butter.
  • 1 cup white wine.
  • 3 quarts of bat-stock.  (Chicken or vegetable stock will do.)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Procedure:
  • Filet the bat, reserving the wings. (See any well-written cookbook.  I suggest the Iron Chef Series.)
  • In a stockpot, start warming up the bat-stock.
  • Melt the butter in a skillet.
  • Brown the garlic in the skillet.
  • Place the bat fillets in the skillet and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Flip the bat fillets, salt and pepper the cooked side.  Cook for an additional 5 minutes.
  • Remove the bat fillets and place on a warm plate.
  • De-glaze the pan with the white wine.  Add the wings and onions.
  • Cook until the onions are translucent.
  • Place filets, wings and onions along with pan-drippings in the stock pot.
  • Cook for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • Note:  Ensure that your bats are SARS virus free.
