A Hero For Where He Was Headed

Allen April 30th, 2004

Most of you know about Pat Tillman, football player who recently died in Afghanistan. He never wanted the attention given him because of what he did. He felt it was just the right thing to do.

Best said by Sgt. Hook:

Sgt Tillman is a hero not because he walked away from the Cardinals, but because of where he walked to. He like all the rest of the Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, and Coastguardsmen volunteered to put himself between the bad guys and our way of life and fight for its preservation. Rest In Peace Sgt Tillman, your service to our nation is an inspiration and you will not be forgotten.

Lori, Marine Mom from Norman

Allen April 30th, 2004

Read Sgt Hook: What is a Hero? to learn of Lori, a Marine mom venting her frustrustrations over progressive and liberals.

I wish I knew who Lori was. She and other Marine moms deserve our support. As do all our fighting families.

Who Knows?

Allen April 30th, 2004

Who knows what horrors await us in the deep, dark still of the night?

Scylla does and relates the story in Teemings - Extras - The Horror of Blimps.

I would rate this story as NSFW — in so much as you have to explain to your co-workers why you are laughing uncontrollably.

Thoughts on the 1st Amendment

Allen April 29th, 2004

First read Michele’s article A Small Victory - More on Pat Tillman: When Idiots Attack. She fisks Rene Gonzales who disparages Pat Tillman’s death recently in Afghanistan.

The next day (today), the Daily Collegian prints a column defending their decision to print the editorial by Mr. Gonzales. And what was the primary factor in deciding to run with the column?

Rene Gonzalez is a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts who occasionally submits columns to The Collegian. While his views in no way reflect the opinion of our editorial board or staff, we base our decisions not on whether we agree with the opinion of students submitting opinion pieces, but on the backbone of journalism: The First Amendment.

Gee, let’s look at that pesky first amendment, shall we?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Gee… I wasn’t aware that Congress passed a law that prohibited Rene from spouting off at the mouth. Nor did they, as far as I am aware, pass a law requiring the editorial board of The Daily Collegian to do so.

What if I was a student at the People Republic of Massachusetts University and wrote a letter to the editor calling for Rene to be drawn and quartered? If I called for people to storm the offices of the Daily Collegian and trash the place? If I put out the word that jack-booted thugs should start bashing heads at the next ANSWER rally? Would the Daily Collegian print my letter? After all, we don’t want to suppress my 1st amendment rights here. And finally, would they figure out who this Jack fellow is and why I can’t seem to find his boots in my latest issue of L. L. Bean?

I think the Daily Collegian let a troll spout off hatred in their paper and are now trying to cover their tracks by dragging the 1st Amendment behind them. It wasn’t the 1st Amendment that caused them to print the letter. It was a lack of editorial control and forethought.

Woof!

Allen April 27th, 2004

This has been an interesting week. Where I work is still “hung-over” with the move of the datacenter from OKC to Little Rock and now we have moved our offices from our old location (the plant at Reno and Council) to our new offices on North Meridian. The network is extremely spotty and I’m stomping fires so fast and furious that I can’t even take time to breathe.

Lots of stuff I want to blog about, but even the PC at home is toes-up. Hopefully things will settle down soon and I can start writing again.

I find, even with my other writing, that I miss blogging. Not sure why. It’s not like I have a fan-base I have to worry about. I just enjoy writing and blogging.

Anyway, hope to post some more stuff soon, just not right now.

Well, obviously right now. Just not much.

Cicada Fiestas: Top Places to Bug Out

Allen April 21st, 2004

This year will be a peak year for Cicadas (aka Katydids) with a 17 year period hatch starting in May. Oklahoma is not listed as one of the sites, but I know that in western Oklahoma (Foss, etc) there were a lot of Cicadas when I visited my grandparents.

Read Cicada Fiestas: Top Places to Bug Out for a guide to hot spots.

I wonder how central Oklahoma, where I now live, will fare. I hope, for a sense of history, that we have a good hatch.

Of course, they will dig up the ground coming out, but some people pay to have their lawn aerated. This is free!

Just a note that I found a fairly good introduction to CSS and using them within MT at mediatinker.com

There. Feeling Comfy Now?

Allen April 20th, 2004

So glad that things have settled down in Spain now that they are withdrawing their troops from Iraq.

No, sir. Nothing messy will happen now.

Nothing as barbaric as grave desecration.
